Table Runner Size Guide: Length, Overhang & 30 cm Width

Table Runner Size Guide: Length, Overhang & 30 cm Width

Choosing a table runner is easier when you start with the tabletop measurements and decide whether you want the ends to hang over the edge. This guide shows the calculation, worked examples, and how to check a 30 cm-wide runner with placemats.

Quick answer: Measure the tabletop length. For an even overhang, add twice the drop you want at one end. For a no-overhang look, choose a runner close to or shorter than the table length and centre it.

1. Measure the table and choose your end drop

Measure the length of the tabletop, then decide how far you want the runner to extend past each short end. The drop is a style choice, so test the proportions before you buy.

Runner length = tabletop length + (2 × chosen end drop)

  • No overhang: choose a runner the same length as, or a little shorter than, the tabletop.
  • Even overhang: add the same drop twice, once for each end.

2. Worked length examples

These examples use sizes available in the Forest Green Woven Table Runner. The 12.5 cm drop below is an example calculation, not a required standard.

Tabletop length Chosen drop at each end Runner length
120 cm 12.5 cm 120 + (2 × 12.5) = 145 cm
150 cm 12.5 cm 150 + (2 × 12.5) = 175 cm
180 cm 12.5 cm 180 + (2 × 12.5) = 205 cm

If your exact calculation falls between available sizes, compare the shorter and longer options against the end drop you prefer. The runner is 30 cm wide and comes in lengths of 115, 145, 175, 205, 235, 265 and 295 cm.

3. Check the width on your tabletop

The runner's listed width is 30 cm. To see how much tabletop remains on each side, centre a 30 cm strip of paper or painter's tape on the table. For example, a centred runner on an 80 cm-wide tabletop leaves 25 cm on each side. Check that your plates, place settings and table edges still have the space you need.

4. Plan a runner and placemat layout

A simple layout places the runner along the centre of the table and a placemat at each seat. Leave enough room for the full place setting. Our French Vintage Oval Fringe Placemats are 30 × 45 cm and come in Coffee Brown or Beige. Because both the runner width and placemat dimensions affect the available tabletop, mark the layout with paper before ordering, especially on a narrow table.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a table runner hang over the ends?

There is no single drop that suits every table or preference. Choose the overhang you want, measure it at one end, and add it twice to the tabletop length.

What runner length suits a 150 cm table?

It depends on your chosen drop. For a 12.5 cm drop at each end, the calculation is 150 + 25 = 175 cm.

Is the jute-look runner made from jute?

The product is described as a woven textile with a jute-look appearance. The supplier does not specify its fibre composition, so it should not be assumed to be made from jute.

Can I use a runner on a console or coffee table?

The product description lists dining tables, consoles, sideboards and coffee tables as possible surfaces. Measure the surface and use the same length calculation to compare sizes.

How should I wash the runner?

The supplier has not provided care instructions. Please confirm care guidance before washing.
